Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade continues to record a sturdy growth of 15.2 per cent to RM133.9 billion in October 2022

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM133.9 billion in October 2022, registered a growth of 15.2 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade 26.0 per cent, Motor Vehicles 11.2 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 7.3 per cent.
In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 10.5 per cent year-on-year to record 145.8 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Retail Trade 22.3 per cent, Motor Vehicles 3.0 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 0.8 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down -2.3 per cent month-on-month in October 2022.
WHOLESALE TRADE
Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM59.9 billion in October 2022 with a growth of 7.3 per cent as against October 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods 18.8 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 17.9 per cent, and Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 11.8 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector edge down-0.3 per cent.
Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 132.1 points, expanded 0.8 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (14.1%), Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (10.9%), Wholesale of Household Goods (10.8%), and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (1.2%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased -0.6 per cent month-on-month.
RETAIL TRADE
Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 26.0 per cent as compared to October 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (40.9%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (40.1%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (25.7%). Compared with September 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 1.1 per cent.
Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 22.3 per cent to 169.4 points as compared to October 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (38.3%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (33.5%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (24.3%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it inched down -0.3 per cent as against September 2022.
MOTOR VEHICLE
Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 11.2 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 62.4 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 49.2 per cent in October 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector decreased -3.5 per cent.
The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 3.0 per cent year-on-year to reach 120.1 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (43.5%) and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (39.9%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector decreased -7.0 per cent month-on-month.
