QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, FOURTH QUARTER 2023

In fourth quarter of 2023, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 4.2 per cent to reach 153.1 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The positive quarterly growth was attributed to  Motor Vehicles with 9.8 per cent, followed by Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade with 4.6 per cent and 2.9 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index rose 0.8 per cent in this quarter.

For seasonally adjusted volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade declined -2.6 per cent as against the third quarter of 2023, dragged down by all sub-sectors namely, Motor Vehicles (-8.2%), Wholesale Trade (-3.6%), and Retail Trade (-1.4%), respectively.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector expanded 4.6 per cent to 138.6 points as compared to the same quarter in 2022. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals with 8.4 per cent. It was followed by Other Specialised Wholesale  (7.7%),  Wholesale of  Household  Goods (3.3%), Non-specialized Wholesale Trade (2.7%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (2.4%), and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (2.2%). However, for quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade inched down -0.8 per cent.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, Wholesale Trade decrease -3.6 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

RETAIL TRADE

In the fourth quarter of 2023, Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 2.9 per cent to 175.1 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The growth was attributed to Retail Sales of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (8.4%), Retail Sales in Non-Specialised Stores (5.0%), Retail Sales of Automotive Fuel (4.4%), Retail Sales via Stalls & Markets (4.2%), and Retail Sales in Household Goods (3.6%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector went up 1.5 per cent.

Within  the  same  period,  seasonally  adjusted  volume  index  of  Retail  Trade  declined -1.4 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered a positive growth of 9.8 per cent year-on-year. This positive momentum was attributed to Sales of Motor Vehicle with 13.1 per cent, followed by Sales of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles with 12.1 per cent and 10.3 per cent, respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as against the previous quarter, it increased 3.7 per cent.

In terms of seasonally adjusted volume index, Motor Vehicles sub-sector shrank -8.2 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, DECEMBER 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM143.9 billion in December 2023, grew 4.8 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 5.9 per cent, Retail Trade 5.0 per cent,and Wholesale Trade 4.4 per cent. Meanwhile, for month-on-month comparison, sales value increased 1.0 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 3.4 per cent year-on-year to record 154.3 points. The increase was supported by Motor Vehicles 3.9 per cent, Retail Trade 3.6 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 3.4 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down -1.4 per cent month-on-month in December 2023.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM62.9 billion in December 2023 with a growth of 4.4 per cent as against December 2022. This increase was attributed to Other Specialised Wholesale 6.2 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & LiveAnimals 5.4 per cent,andWholesaleofHouseholdGoods 5.3 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of thissub-sector decreased-0.4 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 138.4 points, expanded 3.4 per cent   year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Other Specialised Wholesale (6.7%) and Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (6.5%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index inched down -1.9 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 5.0 per cent as compared to December 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (9.9%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (6.6%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (6.3%), Retail Sale of   Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (5.9%), and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (5.8%). Compared with November 2023, sales of this sub-sector increased 1.8 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade grew 3.6 per cent to 177.6 points as compared to December 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were  Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (8.1%), Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (5.9%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (5.1%), and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (5.1%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased -0.5 per cent as against November 2023.

MOTOR VEHICLE

The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 12.3 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 10.9 per cent in December 2023. The volume index of Motor Vehicles expanded 3.9 per cent year-on-year to reach    138.2 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (9.5%), Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (7.2%), and Sale of Motor Vehicles (4.1%). However, seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector decreased -4.6 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, NOVEMBER 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM142.6 billion in November 2023, registered a growth of 6.2 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 12.7 per cent, Wholesale Trade 6.2 per cent, and Retail Trade 4.4 per cent. Meanwhile, for month-on-month comparison, sales value increased 0.2 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 4.7 per cent year-on-year to record 152.7 points. The increase was supported by Motor Vehicles 10.5 per cent and Wholesale Trade 5.8 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 0.7 per cent month-on-month in November 2023.

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM63.2 billion in November 2023 with a growth of 6.2 per cent as against November 2022. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 9.5 per cent and Other Specialised Wholesale 9.3 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased -0.2 per cent.

The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (10.0%) and Other Specialised Wholesale (9.9%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index inched up 2.6 per cent month-on-month.

Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (10.3%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (6.5%), and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (5.8%).  Compared with October 2023, sales of this sub-sector edged down 1.2 per cent.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased -1.0 per cent as against October 2023.

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 12.7 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 16.3 per cent, Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 14.5 per cent, and Sale of Motor Vehicles 13.5 per cent in November 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector recorded a negative growth of -1.6 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles expanded 10.5 per cent year-on-year to reach 134.2 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles (13.0%), Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (12.7%), and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (11.5%). However Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector decreased -1.0 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, OCTOBER 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM142.3 billion in October 2023, registered a growth of 6.5 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 19.1 per cent, Wholesale Trade 5.7 per cent, and Retail Trade 3.9 per cent. Meanwhile, for month-on-month comparison, sales value decreased -0.3 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 4.5 per cent year-on-year to record 152.2 points. The increase was supported by Motor Vehicles 15.8 per cent and Wholesale Trade 4.7 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down -2.2 per cent month-on-month in October 2023.

This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 8.9 per cent, Other Specialised Wholesale 7.5 per cent,and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 5.7 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased -1.4 per cent.

Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (8.5%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (6.3%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (4.6%), and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (3.2%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased -1.8 per cent as against September 2023.

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 19.1 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles which surged 24.6 per cent in October 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector recorded a positive growth of 5.2 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles expanded 15.8 per cent year-on-year to reach 136.6 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles (24.0%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 1.8 per cent month-on-month.

QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, THIRD QUARTER 2023

In third quarter of 2023, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 5.0 per cent to reach 151.8 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The positive quarterly growth was attributed to Motor Vehicles with 11.2 per cent, followed by Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade with 6.1 per cent and 3.4 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index rose 2.5 per cent in this quarter.

For seasonally adjusted volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade edged down -0.8 per cent as against the second quarter of 2023, dragged down by all subsector namely, Retail Trade (-2.8%), Motor Vehicles (-1.9%), and Wholesale Trade (-1.7%), respectively.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector expanded 6.1 per cent to 139.7 points as compared to the same quarter in 2022. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals with 10.9 per cent. It was followed by Other Specialised Wholesale (9.8%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (9.4%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (7.2%), and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (6.1%). For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went up 2.2 per cent.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, Wholesale Trade decreased -1.7 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

RETAIL TRADE

For the third quarter of 2023, Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 3.4 per cent to 172.5 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The growth was attributed to Retail Sales of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (9.6%), Retail Sales of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (9.5%), Retail Sales in Non-specialised Stores (6.6%), Retail Sales via Stalls & Markets (3.8%), and Retail Sales in Specialised Stores (2.8%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector went up 1.5 per cent.

Within the same period, seasonally adjusted volume index of Retail Trade declined -2.8 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered a positive growth of 11.2 per cent year-on-year. This positive momentum was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles with 14.9 per cent and 13.3 per cent, respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as against the previous quarter, it increased 8.5 per cent.

In terms of seasonally adjusted volume index, Motor Vehicles sub-sector shrank -1.9 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM142.7 billion in September 2023, registered a growth of 6.5 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 7.0 per cent,Wholesale Trade 6.9 per cent,and Retail Trade 5.9 per cent. Meanwhile, for month-on-month comparison, sales value increased 0.1 per cent.

The increase was supported by Motor Vehicles 5.9 per cent, Wholesale Trade 5.7 per cent, and Retail Trade 3.8 per cent. Compared with August 2023, sales of this sub-sector edge up 0.9 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 3.8 per cent to 174.5 points as compared to September 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (10.4%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (7.8%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (6.7%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 1.7 per cent as against August 2023.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 7.0 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 18.6 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 17.2 per cent in September 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector recorded a negative growth of –3.6 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles expanded 5.9 per cent year-on-year to reach 130.7 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (14.6%) and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (12.9%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector contracted -12.8 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, AUGUST 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM142.5 billion in August 2023, registered a growth of 6.7 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was   contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 9.7 per cent, Retail Trade 6.3 per cent,and Wholesale Trade 6.2 per cent. Meanwhile, for month-on-month comparison, sales value grew 2.0 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 5.0 per cent year-on-year to record 152.8 points. The increase was supported by Motor Vehicles 8.7 per cent, Wholesale Trade 6.1 per cent, and Retail Trade 3.8 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down -0.03 per cent month-on-month in August 2023.

For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased 1.2 per cent.

Compared with July 2023, sales of this sub-sector increased 1.4 per cent.

Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (11.7%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (9.7%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (7.0%), and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (4.7%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased 0.2 per cent as against July 2023.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 9.7 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 21.6 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 20.7 per cent in August 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector increased 7.1 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles expanded 8.7 per cent year-on-year to reach 136.1 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (17.4%), Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (15.1%), and Sale of Motor Vehicles (8.8%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 3.3 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, JULY 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM139.8 billion in July 2023, registered a growth of 7.2 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 20.5 per cent, Wholesale Trade 5.7 per cent, Retail Trade 5.5 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 5.4 per cent year-on-year to record 149.9 points. The increase was supported by Motor Vehicles 20.4 per cent and Wholesale Trade 6.6 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 2.3 per cent month-on-month in July 2023.

For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased 1.1 per cent.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 20.5 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles which surged 25.9 per cent in July 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector increased 2.0 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles expanded 20.4 per cent year-on-year to reach 127.4 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles (30.7%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 3.5 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, MAY 2023

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded sales value of RM138.0 billion, grew 6.6 per cent in May 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM138.0 billion in May 2023, registered a growth of 6.6 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 22.0 per cent, Retail Trade 5.0 per cent and Wholesale Trade 4.4 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 4.6 per cent year-on-year to record 148.3 points. The increase was supported by Motor Vehicles 17.8 per cent and Wholesale Trade 5.3 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down -4.1 per cent month-on-month in May 2023.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM62.2 billion in May 2023 with a growth of 4.4 per cent as against May 2022. This increase was attributed to Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 11.6 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 9.6 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 8.6 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods 7.9 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 7.3 per cent and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies 5.8 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased 2.1 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 137.3 points, expanded 5.3 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (12.1%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (10.8%), Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (8.7%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (8.0%) and Wholesale of Household Goods (5.8%).Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index inched down –2.5 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 5.0 per cent as compared to May 2022. The groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (10.0%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (8.4%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (6.0%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (6.0%) and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (6.0%). Compared with April 2023, sales of this sub-sector decreased -2.7 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 2.4 per cent to 167.9 points as compared to May 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (10.1%), Retail Sale in Non specialised Stores (6.3%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (6.1%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (4.0%) and Retail Sale Via Stalls &  Markets (3.2%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased-8.8 per cent as against April 2023.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 22.0 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles 29.8 per cent in May 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector increased 16.2 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 17.8 per cent year-on-year to reach 127.6 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles (25.8%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 31.1 per cent month-on-month.

Services sector registered RM1,174.5 billion value of gross output in 2021

PERFORMANCE OF SERVICES SECTOR

Services sector recorded gross output value of RM1,174.5 billion in 2021 as compared to RM1,155.8 billion in 2020, an increase of 1.6 per cent. In line with the growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM7.5 billion to record RM516.3 billion, with annual growth of 1.5 per cent, and thus resulting a value added of RM658.3 billion for the year of 2021.

The number of persons engaged in this sector recorded an increase of 0.1 per cent to 5,517,330 persons as compared to 5,513,840 persons in 2020. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2021 amounted to RM180.4 billion, an increase of 0.6 per cent compared to 2020, and value of fixed assets amounted to RM1,134.5 billion (2.4%).

GROSS OUTPUT

The main contributor for value of gross output was Wholesale & retail trade sub- sector which amounted to RM406.9 billion with a share of 34.6 per cent. This was followed by Information & communication sub-sector of RM182.2 billion (15.5%), and Finance with RM164.8 billion (14.0%). These three sub-sectors contributed 64.2 per cent to the value of gross output of Services sector.

VALUE ADDED

Services sector recorded a value added of RM658.3 billion with annual growth rate of 1.7 per cent compared to RM647.0 billion in 2020. Wholesale & retail trade sub-sector recorded the highest value added amounted to RM255.5 billion (38.8%). This was followed by Finance sub-sector of RM104.9 billion (15.9%), and Information & communication with RM94.8 billion (14.4%).

NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED AND CATEGORY OF WORKERS

Wholesale & retail trade sub-sector registered the highest number of persons engaged of 2,151,997 persons or 39.0 per cent in 2021. The second highest contributor was Food & beverage sub-sector with 968,717 persons or 17.6 per cent followed by Transportation & storage with 457,484 persons or 8.3 per cent. These three sub-sectors contributed  64.9 per cent to the total number of persons engaged in the Services sector.

CATEGORY OF WORKERS AND SALARIES & WAGES

Paid full-time employees recorded a total of 4,412,939 persons with a share of 80.0 per cent, as against working proprietors and unpaid family workers (879,810 persons; 15.9%), and paid part-time employees (224,581 persons; 4.1%). Based on the total number of full-time employees, clerical and related occupations was the largest group of number of persons engaged (2,115,135 persons; 47.9%), followed by elementary occupation (1,140,903 persons; 25.9%), and manager, professional & researcher (851,976 persons; 19.3%).

The total salaries & wages paid in Services sector for the year of 2021 amounted to RM180.4 billion. Wholesale & retail trade sub-sector recorded the highest salaries & wages of RM70.1 billion or 38.8 per cent of the total salaries & wages paid. The second highest contributor was Finance with RM22.1 billion or 12.3 per cent, followed by Transportation & storage with RM15.6 billion or 8.6 per cent. Collectively, the share of salaries & wages to Services sector for all three sub-sectors were RM107.8 billion (59.7%).

PERFORMANCE BY STATE

VALUE OF GROSS OUTPUT

In Services sector, W.P. Kuala Lumpur  was the main contributor to the gross output value in 2021 by recording RM465.9 billion, representing a total share of 39.7 per cent. This was followed by Selangor and Johor with the gross output value of RM345.6 billion (29.4%), and RM73.3 billion (6.2%), respectively. The total value of gross output for these three states amounted to RM884.8 billion (75.3%).

VALUE ADDED

Value added by state in 2021 indicated that three states namely W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Johor were the main contributors to the value added of Services sector. W.P. Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest value added of RM269.2 billion with a share of 40.9 per cent, followed by Selangor with RM189.5 billion (28.8%), and Johor with RM39.6 billion (6.0%). Collectively, the share of value added for these three states was RM498.3 billion (75.7%).

NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED AND SALARIES & WAGES PAID

Selangor showed the highest number of persons engaged in Services sector with 1,496,807 persons (27.1%), followed by W.P. Kuala Lumpur, and Johor which recorded 1,294,094 persons (23.5%), and 514,750 persons (9.3%), respectively. Total number of persons engaged for these three states to Services sector was 3,305,651 persons (59.9%).

Meanwhile, for salaries & wages, W.P. Kuala Lumpur paid the highest value of RM59.3 billion (32.8%). The second highest state was Selangor with RM58.2 billion (32.3%), followed by Johor with RM13.9 billion (7.7%). The total salaries & wages paid for these three states to Services sector was RM131.4 billion (72.8%).
