PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, MAY 2023

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded sales value of RM138.0 billion, grew 6.6 per cent in May 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM138.0 billion in May 2023, registered a growth of 6.6 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 22.0 per cent, Retail Trade 5.0 per cent and Wholesale Trade 4.4 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 4.6 per cent year-on-year to record 148.3 points. The increase was supported by Motor Vehicles 17.8 per cent and Wholesale Trade 5.3 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down -4.1 per cent month-on-month in May 2023.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM62.2 billion in May 2023 with a growth of 4.4 per cent as against May 2022. This increase was attributed to Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 11.6 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 9.6 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 8.6 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods 7.9 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 7.3 per cent and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies 5.8 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased 2.1 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 137.3 points, expanded 5.3 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (12.1%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (10.8%), Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (8.7%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (8.0%) and Wholesale of Household Goods (5.8%).Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index inched down –2.5 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 5.0 per cent as compared to May 2022. The groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (10.0%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (8.4%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (6.0%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (6.0%) and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (6.0%). Compared with April 2023, sales of this sub-sector decreased -2.7 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 2.4 per cent to 167.9 points as compared to May 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (10.1%), Retail Sale in Non specialised Stores (6.3%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (6.1%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (4.0%) and Retail Sale Via Stalls &  Markets (3.2%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased-8.8 per cent as against April 2023.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 22.0 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles 29.8 per cent in May 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector increased 16.2 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 17.8 per cent year-on-year to reach 127.6 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles (25.8%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 31.1 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, APRIL 2023

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded sales value of RM136.0 billion, grew 6.3 per cent in April 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM136.0 billion in April 2023, registered a growth of 6.3 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by two sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade 12.9 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 3.2 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 4.7 per cent year-on-year to record 147.3 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Retail Trade 10.0 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 3.4 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 6.5 per cent month-on-month in April 2023.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM60.9 billion in April 2023 with a growth of 3.2 per cent as against April 2022. This increase was attributed to Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 8.5 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 8.0 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 7.7 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods 5.4 per cent and Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals  5.1 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased-1.1 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 135.0 points, expanded 3.4 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (3.3%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (5.2%), Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (6.0%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (12.7%) and Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (7.0%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index inched up 2.7 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 12.9 per cent as compared to April 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (19.6%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (17.4%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (18.0%), Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (8.9%) and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (13.1%). Compared with March 2023, sales of this sub-sector increased 3.1 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 10.0 per cent to 173.1 points as        compared to April 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (20.3%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (16.2%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (15.8%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (11.3%) and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (10.0%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased11.8 per cent as against March 2023.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a negative growth of –5.1 per cent year-on-year. The decrease was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles –29.8 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles –17.3 per cent in April 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector decreased –19.8 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles decreased –9.0 per cent year-on-year to reach 110.2 points. The decrease was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (-35.5%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles (-21.2%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 1.0 per cent month-on-month.

QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, FIRST QUARTER 2023

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia grew 9.5 per cent in first quarter 2023 to register 147.4 points

In the first quarter of 2023, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 9.5 per cent to reach 147.4 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The positive quarterly growth was attributed to Retail Trade with 14.7 per cent, followed by Motor Vehicles and Wholesale Trade with 11.4 per cent and 3.5 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index rose 0.4 per cent in this quarter.

For seasonally adjusted volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade increased  3.6 per cent as against the fourth quarter of 2022, supported by Motor Vehicles and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors of 7.2 per cent and 5.4 per cent, respectively.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector expanded 3.5 per cent to 133.9 points as compared to the same quarter in 2022. This increment was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals with 11.4 per cent, followed by Wholesale of Household Goods and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco with 10.3 per cent and 9.1 per cent, respectively.

For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade inched up 1.1 per cent.
As for seasonally adjusted volume index, Wholesale Trade went up 5.4 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

RETAIL TRADE

For the first quarter of 2023, Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 14.7 per cent to 168.8 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The growth was attributed to Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (40.0%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (22.9%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (18.8%). Conversely, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector declined –0.8 per cent.

Within the same period, seasonally adjusted volume index of Retail Trade almost unchanged as compared to the previous quarter (QoQ: 0.0%).

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered a positive growth of 11.4 per cent year-on-year. This positive momentum was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles of 13.7 per cent, followed by Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles with 12.4 per cent and 12.3 per cent, respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as against the
previous quarter, it increased 3.2 per cent.

In terms of seasonally adjusted volume index, Motor Vehicles sub-sector went up 7.2 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, MARCH 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM138.5 billion in March 2023, registered a growth of 11.9 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade 17.7 per cent, Motor Vehicles 9.3 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 7.6 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 9.4 per cent year-on-year to record 149.8 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Retail Trade 13.8 per cent, Wholesale Trade 6.7 per cent and Motor Vehicles 5.6 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down -0.9 per cent month-on-month in March 2023.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM61.6 billion in March 2023 with a growth of 7.6 per cent as against March 2022. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods 16.4 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 12.9 per cent, Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 10.7 per cent, and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies 7.7 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased 4.1 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 136.5 points, expanded 6.7 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (13.3%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (10.3%), Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (8.0%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (7.8%) and Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (7.3%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index inched up 2.6 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 17.7 per cent as compared to March 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (38.1%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (21.9%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (19.8%), Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (18.9%) and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (18.8%). Compared with February 2023, sales of this sub-sector increased 0.9 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 13.8 per cent to 168.6 points as compared to March 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (37.3%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (20.3%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (17.7%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (15.7%) and Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (15.3%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased 1.2 per cent as against February 2023.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 9.3 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 20.9 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 20.2 per cent in March 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector increased 10.6 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 5.6 per cent year-on-year to reach 139.8 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (14.1%) and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (13.8%) in March 2023. Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector decreased -7.5 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, FEBRUARY 2023

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded sales value of RM134.3 billion, grew 14.7 per cent in February 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM134.3 billion in February 2023, registered a growth of 14.7 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 36.1 per cent, Retail Trade 19.2 per cent and Wholesale Trade 5.9 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 10.6 per cent year-on-year to record 145.4 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Motor Vehicles 24.0 per cent, Retail Trade 13.9 per cent and Wholesale Trade 3.4 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 5.5 per cent month-on-month in February 2023.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM59.1 billion in February 2023 with a growth of 5.9 per cent as against February 2022. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods 15.8 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 10.0 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 9.9 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 9.0 per cent, Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 6.1 per cent, and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies 1.9 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased  -2.0 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 130.4 points, expanded 3.4 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (13.0%), Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (11.1%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (8.8%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (8.4%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index inched up 4.7 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 19.2 per cent as compared to February 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (45.9%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (24.2%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (21.1%). Compared with January 2023, sales of this sub-sector decreased -2.4 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 13.9 per cent to 166.6 points as compared to February 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (42.1%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (20.5%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (20.4%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (17.9%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased 3.3 per cent as against January 2023.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 36.1 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles 49.8 per cent,  Sales, Maintenance & repair of Motorcycles 24.4 per cent, Sales of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 22.6 per cent and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 21.2 per cent in February 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector increased 11.7 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 24.0 per cent year-on-year to reach 130.1 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles (38.8%), Sales of Motor Vehicles parts & Accessories (14.8%), Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (13.8%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (3.6%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 17.3 per cent month-on-month.

ANNUAL ECONOMIC STATISTICS 2022, SERVICES SECTOR

Services sector registered RM1,174.5 billion value of gross output in 2021

PERFORMANCE OF SERVICES SECTOR

Services sector recorded gross output value of RM1,174.5 billion in 2021 as compared to RM1,155.8 billion in 2020, an increase of 1.6 per cent. In line with the growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM7.5 billion to record RM516.3 billion, with annual growth of 1.5 per cent, and thus resulting a value added of RM658.3 billion for the year of 2021.

The number of persons engaged in this sector recorded an increase of 0.1 per cent to 5,517,330 persons as compared to 5,513,840 persons in 2020. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2021 amounted to RM180.4 billion, an increase of 0.6 per cent compared to 2020, and value of fixed assets amounted to RM1,134.5 billion (2.4%).

GROSS OUTPUT

The main contributor for value of gross output was Wholesale & retail trade sub- sector which amounted to RM406.9 billion with a share of 34.6 per cent. This was followed by Information & communication sub-sector of RM182.2 billion (15.5%), and Finance with RM164.8 billion (14.0%). These three sub-sectors contributed 64.2 per cent to the value of gross output of Services sector.

VALUE ADDED

Services sector recorded a value added of RM658.3 billion with annual growth rate of 1.7 per cent compared to RM647.0 billion in 2020. Wholesale & retail trade sub-sector recorded the highest value added amounted to RM255.5 billion (38.8%). This was followed by Finance sub-sector of RM104.9 billion (15.9%), and Information & communication with RM94.8 billion (14.4%).

NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED AND CATEGORY OF WORKERS

Wholesale & retail trade sub-sector registered the highest number of persons engaged of 2,151,997 persons or 39.0 per cent in 2021. The second highest contributor was Food & beverage sub-sector with 968,717 persons or 17.6 per cent followed by Transportation & storage with 457,484 persons or 8.3 per cent. These three sub-sectors contributed  64.9 per cent to the total number of persons engaged in the Services sector.

CATEGORY OF WORKERS AND SALARIES & WAGES

Paid full-time employees recorded a total of 4,412,939 persons with a share of 80.0 per cent, as against working proprietors and unpaid family workers (879,810 persons; 15.9%), and paid part-time employees (224,581 persons; 4.1%). Based on the total number of full-time employees, clerical and related occupations was the largest group of number of persons engaged (2,115,135 persons; 47.9%), followed by elementary occupation (1,140,903 persons; 25.9%), and manager, professional & researcher (851,976 persons; 19.3%).

The total salaries & wages paid in Services sector for the year of 2021 amounted to RM180.4 billion. Wholesale & retail trade sub-sector recorded the highest salaries & wages of RM70.1 billion or 38.8 per cent of the total salaries & wages paid. The second highest contributor was Finance with RM22.1 billion or 12.3 per cent, followed by Transportation & storage with RM15.6 billion or 8.6 per cent. Collectively, the share of salaries & wages to Services sector for all three sub-sectors were RM107.8 billion (59.7%).

PERFORMANCE BY STATE

VALUE OF GROSS OUTPUT

In Services sector, W.P. Kuala Lumpur  was the main contributor to the gross output value in 2021 by recording RM465.9 billion, representing a total share of 39.7 per cent. This was followed by Selangor and Johor with the gross output value of RM345.6 billion (29.4%), and RM73.3 billion (6.2%), respectively. The total value of gross output for these three states amounted to RM884.8 billion (75.3%).

VALUE ADDED

Value added by state in 2021 indicated that three states namely W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Johor were the main contributors to the value added of Services sector. W.P. Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest value added of RM269.2 billion with a share of 40.9 per cent, followed by Selangor with RM189.5 billion (28.8%), and Johor with RM39.6 billion (6.0%). Collectively, the share of value added for these three states was RM498.3 billion (75.7%).

NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED AND SALARIES & WAGES PAID

Selangor showed the highest number of persons engaged in Services sector with 1,496,807 persons (27.1%), followed by W.P. Kuala Lumpur, and Johor which recorded 1,294,094 persons (23.5%), and 514,750 persons (9.3%), respectively. Total number of persons engaged for these three states to Services sector was 3,305,651 persons (59.9%).

Meanwhile, for salaries & wages, W.P. Kuala Lumpur paid the highest value of RM59.3 billion (32.8%). The second highest state was Selangor with RM58.2 billion (32.3%), followed by Johor with RM13.9 billion (7.7%). The total salaries & wages paid for these three states to Services sector was RM131.4 billion (72.8%).

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade posted an increase of 12.4 per cent year-on-year to register RM135.1 billion in January 2023

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM135.1 billion in January 2023, registered a growth of 12.4 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade 21.7 per cent, Motor Vehicles  20.1 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 3.1 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 8.6 per cent year-on-year to record 147.3 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Retail Trade 16.2 per cent, Motor Vehicles 10.8 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 0.3 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down -4.4 per cent month-on-month in January 2023.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM60.4 billion in January 2023 with a growth of 3.1 per cent as against January 2022. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 12.8 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 9.5 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods 8.6 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 7.6 per cent, and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 2.6 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector went up 0.1 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 134.5 points, expanded 0.3 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (16.3%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (8.1%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (8.0%), and Wholesale of Household Goods (5.0%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index inched down 3.3 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 21.7 per cent as compared to January 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (45.0%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (29.1%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (24.6%). Compared with December 2022, sales of this sub-sector increased 0.2 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 16.2 per cent to 171.0 points as compared to January 2022. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (40.6%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (27.7%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (20.9%), and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (20.4%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased 1.9 per cent as against December 2022.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 20.1 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles 25.0 per cent and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 16.8 per cent in January 2023. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector inched down 13.4 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 10.8 per cent year-on-year to reach 119.3 points. PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, DECEMBER 2022

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade hits all-time high of RM137.3 billion in December, with annual sales amounted RM1.6 trillion in 2022

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM137.3 billion in December 2022, registered a growth of 13.8 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade 22.7 per cent, Motor Vehicles 20.3 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 4.7 per cent. In 2022, the Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector recorded RM1.6 trillion, increased 19.6 per cent compared to 4.0 per cent in 2021. As for COVID-19 pre-pandemic comparison, this subsector has surpassed the 2019 value level by RM228.1 billion or growth of 17.2 per cent (2019 = RM1.3 trillion).

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 9.5 per cent  year-on-year to record 149.2 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Retail Trade 17.4 per cent, Motor Vehicles 9.7 per cent, and Wholesale Trade  1.1 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 0.2 per cent month-on-month in December 2022.  Volume index in 2022 was recorded 142.1 points compared to 124.3 points in 2021, increased 14.3 per cent .

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM60.3 billion in December 2022 with a growth of 4.7 per cent as against December 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 18.2 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 15.0 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods 7.6 per cent,  Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 6.1 per cent, and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 5.9 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 1.4 per cent. In 2022, this activity increased 10.7 per cent to RM710.3 billion as compared to 6.4 per cent in the previous year.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 133.8 points, expanded 1.1 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (20.5%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (10.4%), Wholesale of Household Goods (5.5%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (4.7%), and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (2.2%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index increased 0.6 per cent month-on-month. Volume index of Wholesale Trade in 2022 increased 3.6 per cent to 131.1 points as compared to 3.8 per cent in year 2021.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 22.7 per cent as compared to December 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (44.4%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (30.7%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (24.7%). Compared with November 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 1.2 per cent. The sales value in 2022 amounted to RM661.1 billion, an increase of 23.9 per cent as compared to 4.4 per cent in 2021.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 17.4 per cent to 171.3 points as compared to December 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (38.6%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (29.3%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (20.8%), and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (19.4%) as presented. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it inched down -1.8 per cent as against November 2022. In 2022, volume index of Retail Trade recorded 161.5 points, increased 19.2 per cent compared to 3.5 per cent in year 2021.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 20.3 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 30.9 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 27.3 per cent in December 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector increased 9.3 per cent. In 2022, this activity recorded a sales value of RM183.2 billion, increased 47.6 per cent compared to -8.1 per cent in the previous year.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 9.7 per cent year-on-year to reach 133.0 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (20.4%) and Sales of Motor Vehicles (19.3%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 6.1 per cent month-on-month. Volume index of Motor Vehicles in 2022 recorded an increase of 39.2 per cent to achieve 118.6 points compared to 85.2 points in the previous year.

QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, FORTH QUARTER 2022

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia grew 9.9 per cent in forth quarter 2022 to register 146.9 points

In the fourth quarter of 2022, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 9.9 per cent to reach 146.9 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year, bringing the overall performance for 2022 to 4.3 per cent as compared to 2021. The positive quarterly growth was recorded in Retail Trade and Motor Vehicles sub-sectors with 19.3 per cent and 7.0 per cent, respectively, followed by Wholesale Trade of 0.9 per cent. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index also increased 1.6 per cent in this quarter.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade decreased -1.8 per cent as against the third quarter of 2022, pulled down by Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade sub-sectors of -2.0 per cent and -0.1 per cent, respectively.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector went up 0.9 per cent in fourth quarter 2022 as compared to the same quarter in 2021. This increment was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Material & Live Animals with 13.7 per cent, followed by Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis of 11.7 per cent. For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went up 0.6 per cent.

RETAIL TRADE

For the fourth quarter of 2022, Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 19.3 per cent to 170.1 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The growth was attributed to Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (35.7%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (32.9%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (22.0%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector posted an increment of 2.0 per cent.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered a positive growth of 7.0 per cent year-on-year. This positive momentum was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles which increased 29.2 per cent and 25.6 per cent, respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as against the previous quarter, it increased 5.1 per cent.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, NOVEMBER 2022

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade posts a sturdy growth of 13.9 per cent to RM133.9 billion in November 2022

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM133.9 billion in November 2022, registered a growth of 13.9 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade 22.8 per cent, Motor Vehicles 17.2 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 5.6 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 9.7 per cent year-on-year to record 145.7 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Retail Trade 18.3 per cent, Motor Vehicles 8.3 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 0.6 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 1.1 per cent month-on-month in November 2022.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM59.5 billion in November 2022 with a growth of 5.6 per cent as against November 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 14.7 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods 14.4 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 9.4 per cent, Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 6.2 per cent and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 6.0 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector edged down -0.6 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 131.4 points, expanded 0.6 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (10.4%), Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (10.1%), Wholesale of Household Goods (8.1%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (4.1%), and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (2.7%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index increased 2.6 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 22.8 per cent as compared to November 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (40.9%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (32.8%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (23.9%). Compared with October 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 0.7 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 18.3 per cent to 169.7 points as compared to November 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (35.0%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (31.5%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (21.0%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it inched down -2.0 per cent as against October 2022.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 17.2 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 40.6 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 32.8 per cent in November 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector decreased -1.7 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 8.3 per cent year-on-year to reach 119.3 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (26.2%) and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (21.6%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 1.1 per cent month-on-month.
