QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, THIRD QUARTER 2023

In third quarter of 2023, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 5.0 per cent to reach 151.8 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The positive quarterly growth was attributed to Motor Vehicles with 11.2 per cent, followed by Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade with 6.1 per cent and 3.4 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index rose 2.5 per cent in this quarter.

For seasonally adjusted volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade edged down -0.8 per cent as against the second quarter of 2023, dragged down by all subsector namely, Retail Trade (-2.8%), Motor Vehicles (-1.9%), and Wholesale Trade (-1.7%), respectively.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector expanded 6.1 per cent to 139.7 points as compared to the same quarter in 2022. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals with 10.9 per cent. It was followed by Other Specialised Wholesale (9.8%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (9.4%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (7.2%), and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (6.1%). For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went up 2.2 per cent.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, Wholesale Trade decreased -1.7 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

RETAIL TRADE

For the third quarter of 2023, Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 3.4 per cent to 172.5 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The growth was attributed to Retail Sales of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (9.6%), Retail Sales of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (9.5%), Retail Sales in Non-specialised Stores (6.6%), Retail Sales via Stalls & Markets (3.8%), and Retail Sales in Specialised Stores (2.8%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector went up 1.5 per cent.

Within the same period, seasonally adjusted volume index of Retail Trade declined -2.8 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered a positive growth of 11.2 per cent year-on-year. This positive momentum was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles with 14.9 per cent and 13.3 per cent, respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as against the previous quarter, it increased 8.5 per cent.

In terms of seasonally adjusted volume index, Motor Vehicles sub-sector shrank -1.9 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

1. Preliminary Report Wholesale & Retail Census 2019

The event was held on 27th December in Conference Hall 1, Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia and officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Sri Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician Malaysia.

2. Malaysia Digital Economy 2018

Held on 18th October in Bilik Mawar, Aras 8, Department of Statistics Malaysia, Putrajaya, the event was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Sri Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician Malaysia.

3. Domestic Tourism Survey (DTS) by State, 2018

The launching event was held on 27th September at EQ Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Tourism Malaysia (TM) and Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA). The event was officiated by YB Tuan Muhammad Bakhtiar bin Wan Chik, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
