Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade continues to records a sturdy growth of 23.9 per cent to RM134.0 billion in September 2022

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM134.0 billion in September 2022, registered a growth of 23.9 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 51.0 per cent, Retail Trade 30.0 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 13.3 per cent.
In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 18.4 per cent year-on-year to record 146.0 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Motor Vehicles 43.9 per cent, Retail Trade 27.1 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 3.5 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down 2.0 per cent month-on-month in September 2022.
WHOLESALE TRADE
Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM60.0 billion in September 2022 with a growth of 13.3 per cent as against September 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 27.5 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods 21.9 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 16.0 per cent, and Other Specialised Wholesale 13.9 per cent.For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector edge down 0.2 per cent.
Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 132.5 points, expanded 3.5 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis(20.5%), Wholesale of Household Goods (14.5%), Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (12.9%) and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (3.5%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 2.3 per cent month-on-month.
RETAIL TRADE
Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 30.0 per cent as compared to September 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (44.4%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (43.4%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (31.9%). Compared with August 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 1.2 per cent.
Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 27.1 per cent to 168.1 points as compared to September 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (43.0%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (37.3%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (31.5%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 2.3 per cent as against August 2022.
MOTOR VEHICLE
Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 51.0 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 80.2 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 65.8 per cent September 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector decreased 1.3 per cent.
The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 43.9 per cent year-on-year to reach 123.2 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (68.6%) and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (59.3%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector decreased 0.6 per cent month-on-month.
