PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, SEPTEMBER 2022

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade continues to records a sturdy growth of 23.9 per cent to RM134.0 billion in September 2022

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM134.0 billion in September 2022, registered a growth of 23.9 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 51.0 per cent, Retail Trade 30.0 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 13.3 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 18.4 per cent year-on-year to record 146.0 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Motor Vehicles 43.9 per cent, Retail Trade 27.1 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 3.5 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down 2.0 per cent month-on-month in September 2022.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM60.0 billion in September 2022 with a growth of 13.3 per cent as against September 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 27.5 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods 21.9 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 16.0 per cent, and Other Specialised Wholesale 13.9 per cent.For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector edge down 0.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 132.5 points, expanded 3.5 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis(20.5%), Wholesale of Household Goods (14.5%), Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (12.9%) and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (3.5%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 2.3 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 30.0 per cent as compared to September 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (44.4%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (43.4%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (31.9%). Compared with August 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 1.2 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 27.1 per cent to 168.1 points as compared to September 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (43.0%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (37.3%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (31.5%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 2.3 per cent as against August 2022.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 51.0 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 80.2 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 65.8 per cent September 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector decreased 1.3 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 43.9 per cent year-on-year to reach 123.2 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (68.6%) and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (59.3%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector decreased 0.6 per cent month-on-month.

QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, THIRD QUARTER 2022

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia grew 25.9 per cent in third quarter 2022 to register 144.5 points

In the third quarter of 2022, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 25.9 per cent to reach 144.5 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The positive growth was recorded in Motor Vehicles and Retail Trade sub-sectors with 142.4 per cent and 29.6 per cent, respectively, followed by Wholesale Trade of 7.1 per cent. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index also increased 1.6 per cent in this quarter.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade decreased -2.1 per cent as against the second quarter of 2022, contributed by Motor Vehicles, Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade sub-sectors of -10.9 per cent, -3.8 per cent and -3.1 per cent, respectively

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector went up 7.1 per cent in third quarter 2022 as compared to the same quarter in 2021. This increment was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods with 24.3 per cent, followed by Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis of 15.4 per cent. For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went up 0.5 per cent.

RETAIL TRADE

For the third quarter of 2022, Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 29.6 per cent to 166.8 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The growth was attributed to Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (51.7%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (43.6%) and Retail Sale of Non-Specialised Stores (32.3%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector posted an increment of 2.9 per cent.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered a positive growth of 142.4 per cent year-on-year. This positive momentum was contributed by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles and Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories which increased 212.9 per cent and 166.2 per cent, respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as against the previous quarter, it increased 0.9 per cent.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, AUGUST 2022

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded the highest sales value of RM133.7 billion with
33.7 per cent year-on-year in August 2022

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM133.7 billion in August 2022, registered a growth of 33.7 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 185.3 per cent, Retail Trade 34.5 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 16.0 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered 27.0 per cent year-on-year to record 145.6 points. The increment was supported by the increase in Motor Vehicles 169.6 per cent, Retail Trade 30.1 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 7.4 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 3.1 per cent month-on-month in August 2022.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM60.1 billion in August 2022 with a growth of 16.0 per cent as against August 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods 27.9 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 23.9 per cent, and Other Specialised Wholesale 16.8 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 0.7 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 132.3 points, expanded 7.4 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (28.2%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (9.9%), and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (8.4%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 5.2 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 34.5 per cent as compared to August 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (54.0%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (45.7%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (37.1%). Compared with July 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 0.7 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 30.1 per cent to 166.6 points as compared to August 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (50.6%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (44.5%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (32.6%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 1.9 per cent as against July 2022.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 185.3 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 471.2 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles 206.3 per cent in August 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector increased 17.8 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 169.6 per cent year-on-year to reach 125.8 points. The increase was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (733.5%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles (197.9%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 23.5 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, JULY 2022

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade records a sturdy growth of 41.0 per cent to RM130.7 billion in July 2022

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM130.7 billion in July 2022, registered a growth of 41.0 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 613.8 per cent, Retail Trade 37.5 per cent; and Wholesale Trade 20.6 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 33.7 per cent year-on-year to record 142.5 points. The increment was supported by the increase of Motor Vehicles 681.6 per cent, Retail Trade 31.6 per cent; and Wholesale Trade 10.8 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down 1.4 per cent month-on-month in July 2022.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM59.7 billion in July 2022 with a growth of 20.6 per cent as against July 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods 35.0 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 32.5 per cent; and Other Specialised Wholesale 22.0 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased 1.4 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 130.1 points, expanded 10.8 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (31.6%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (19.2%), and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (17.2%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 0.1 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 37.5 per cent as compared to July 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (73.7%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (47.1%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (39.1%). Compared with June 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 0.8 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 31.6 per cent to 165.8 points as compared to July 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (71.3%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (43.4%); and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (32.7%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 0.3 per cent as against June 2022.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 613.8 per cent; year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 1,062.3 per cent; and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 916.0 per cent in July 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector decreased 10.5 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 681.6 per cent year-on-year to reach 107.8 points. The increase was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (1,536.2%), and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (940.4%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector decreased 20.2 per cent; month-on-month.

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade records a sturdy growth of 44.0 per cent to RM132.8 billion in June 2022, with Motor Vehicles increase 1,642.8 per cent

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM132.8 billion in June 2022, registered a growth of 44.0 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 1,642.8 per cent, Retail Trade 38.4 per cent and Wholesale Trade 19.3 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 35.8 per cent year-on-year to record 144.3 points. The increment was supported by the increase of Motor Vehicles 1,529.9 per cent, Retail Trade 31.3 per cent and Wholesale Trade 10.7 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down 2.3 per cent month-on-month in June 2022.

This increase was attributed to Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 43.4 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 32.6 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods 22.9 per cent; and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies 18.7 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 1.6 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 132.0 points, expanded 10.7 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (28.7%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (27.6%), and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (19.0%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index increased 2.1 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 38.4 per cent as compared to June 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (107.0%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (44.3%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (38.4%). Compared with May 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 0.2 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 31.3 per cent to 164.9 points as compared to June 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (109.8%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (40.7%); and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (31.5%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 9.8 per cent as against May 2022.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 1,642.8 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles 2,430.2 per cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 1,693.8 per cent in June 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector increased 15.8 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 1,529.9 per cent year-on-year to reach 121.6 points. The increase was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (2,893.4%), and Sale of Motor Vehicles (2,628.3%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 5.4 per cent month-on-month.

QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, SECOND QUARTER 2022

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia grew 19.3 per cent in second quarter 2022 to register 142.2 points

In the second quarter of 2022, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 19.3 per cent to reach 142.2 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The positive growth was recorded in Motor Vehicles and Retail Trade sub-sectors with 66.4 per cent and 23.9 per cent, respectively, followed by Wholesale Trade of 5.6 per cent. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index also increased 5.6 per cent in this quarter.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade grew 8.5 per cent as against the first quarter of 2022. The positive growth was contributed by Retail Trade, Motor Vehicles and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors of 16.4 per cent, 14.6 per cent and 4.0 per cent respectively.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector went up 5.6 per cent in second quarter 2022 as compared to the same quarter in 2021. This increment was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods with 22.2 per cent, followed by Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment and Supplies of 10.9 per cent. For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went up 1.3 per cent.

RETAIL TRADE

For the second quarter of 2022, Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 23.9 per cent to 162.1 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The increment was attributed to Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (60.4%), Retail Sale in Non-Specialised Stores (29.8%) and Retail Sale of Other Goods In Specialised Stores (28.7%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector posted an increment of 10.1 per cent.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered a positive growth of 66.4 per cent year-on-year. This positive momentum was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles which increased 85.0 per cent and 81.4 per cent, respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as againts the previous quarter, it increased 1.8 per cent.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, MAY 2022

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade posted the highest sales since 2013 for May with RM129.8 billion, grew 19.9 per cent with online purchases 25.9 per cent

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM129.8 billion in May 2022, registered a growth of 19.9 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade 29.9 per cent, Motor Vehicles 20.1 per cent and Wholesale Trade 11.7 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of
14.7 per cent year-on-year to record 141.8 points. The increment was supported by the increase of Retail Trade 24.2 per cent, Motor Vehicles 21.5 per cent and Wholesale Trade 3.1 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down 0.7 per cent month-on-month in May 2022.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM59.6 billion in May 2022 with a growth of 11.7 per cent as against May 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods 22.1 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 17.7 per cent, and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 12.0 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 0.9 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 130.4 points, expanded 3.1 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (18.5%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (7.2%), and Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (5.8%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 2.6 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 29.9 per cent as compared to May 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (54.6%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (36.3%), and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (30.8%). Compared with April 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 5.1 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 24.2 per cent to 164.1 points as compared to May 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (56.4%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (32.1%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (28.9%), and Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (25.4%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 4.5 per cent as against April 2022.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 20.1 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 37.4 per cent, Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 34.3 per cent, and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 23.2 per cent in May 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector dropped 9.6 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 21.5 per cent year-on-year to reach 110.1 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (32.2%), and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (28.1%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector decreased 10.9 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, APRIL 2022

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade jumped 15.2 per cent in April to record RM128.0 billion, driven by Hari Raya celebration and the increase in online purchases

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM128.0 billion in April 2022, registered a growth of 15.2 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade 20.9 per cent, Wholesale Trade 11.5 per cent and Motor Vehicles 11.3 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of
10.0 per cent year-on-year to record 140.6 points. The increment was supported by the increase of Retail Trade 16.6 per cent, Motor Vehicles 7.2 per cent and Wholesale Trade 3.3 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 7.9 per cent month-on-month in April 2022.

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM59.0 billion in April 2022 with a growth of 11.5 per cent as against April 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods 22.9 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 14.9 per cent, and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 11.8 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 3.1 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 130.6 points, expanded 3.3 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (19.6%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (6.9%), and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (3.8%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index increased 5.2 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 20.9 per cent as compared to April 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (37.7%), Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (28.6%), and Retail Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (26.4%). Compared with March 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 7.4 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 16.6 per cent to 157.3 points as compared to April 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (31.2%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (26.0%), Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (25.8%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (17.7%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (17.0%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 13.6 per cent as against March 2022.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 11.3 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 33.8 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 31.1 per cent in April 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector dropped 7.7 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 7.2 per cent year-on-year to reach 121.1 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (27.8%) and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (24.7%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 10.7 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, MARCH 2022

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade monthly sales set new record of RM123.8 billion in March 2022, rose 9.8 per cent

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM123.8 billion in March 2022, registered a growth of 9.8 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 11.1 per cent, Retail Trade 10.8 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 8.6 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 4.8 per cent year-on-year to record 136.9 points. The increment was supported by the increase of Retail Trade 7.3 per cent, Motor Vehicles 6.5 per cent and Wholesale Trade 1.2 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 0.5 per cent month-on-month in March 2022.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM57.2 billion in March 2022 with a growth of 8.6 per cent as against March 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animal 18.2 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 9.4 per cent and Wholesale of Household Goods 9.0 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 2.5 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 127.8 points, expanded 1.2 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (6.6%), Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 4.8 per cent, Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (4.3%), and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (2.3%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased -0.9 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 10.8 per cent as compared to March 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (26.5%), Retail Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (16.2%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (11.8%), and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (11.4%). Compared with February 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 2.2 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 7.3 per cent to 148.2 points as compared to March 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (24.3%), Retail Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (14.0%), Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (9.3%), and Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (7.4%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 1.5 per cent as against February 2022.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of 11.1 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 26.9 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 22.5 per cent in March 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector elavated 33.9 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 6.5 per cent year-on-year to reach 132.4 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (18.6%), Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (16.2%), and Sale of Motor Vehicles (10.3%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 17.4 per cent month-on-month.

QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, FIRST QUARTER 2022

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia registered a growth of 3.9 per cent in first quarter 2022

In the first quarter of 2022, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 3.9 per cent to reach 134.7 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The positive growth was recorded in Motor Vehicles and Retail Trade sub-sectors with 8.8 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively, followed by Wholesale Trade of 1.2 per cent. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index also increased 0.7 per cent in this quarter.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade grew 5.2 per cent as against the fourth quarter of 2021. The positive growth was contributed by Retail Trade, Motor Vehicles and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors of 5.9 per cent, 5.0 per cent and 2.8 per cent respectively.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector went up 1.2 per cent in first quarter 2022 as compared to the same quarter in 2021. This increment was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Material & Lives Animals with 8.4 per cent, followed by Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco of 4.6 per cent. For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went down –1.5 per cent.

RETAIL TRADE

For the first quarter of 2022, Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 5.1 per cent to 147.2 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The increment was attributed to Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (26.3%), Retail Sale in Non-Specialised Stores (11.1%) and Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (11.0%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector posted an increment of 3.2 per cent.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered a positive growth of 8.8 per cent year-on-year. This positive momentum was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles which increased 18.5 per cent and 16.5 per cent, respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as against the previous quarter, it declined -0.9 per cent.
