PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, FEBRUARY 2022

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade sales rose 8.5 per cent to record RM117.2 billion in February 2022

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM117.2 billion in February 2022,registered a growth of 8.5 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 12.5 per cent, Retail Trade 1.2 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 6.2 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 3.8 per cent year-on-year to record 131.7 points. The increment was supported by the increase of Motor Vehicles 9.4 per cent, Retail Trade 5.4 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 0.4 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 4.9 per cent month-on-month in February 2022.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM55.9 billion in February 2022 with a growth of 6.2 per cent as against February 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 15.9 per cent and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 9.2 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector declined -4.7 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 125.8 points, expanded 0.4 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (5.3%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (2.4%), Wholesale of Household Goods (2.0%), and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (1.1%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index increased marginally 1.5 per cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 10.2 per cent as compared to February 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (25.9%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (18.1%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (15.9%). However, compared with January 2022, sales of this sub-sector edged down -0.4 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 5.4 per cent to 146.2 points as compared to February 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (28.4%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (14.9%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (12.2%), and Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (6.4%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 6.2 per cent as against January 2022.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a growth of 12.5 per cent year-on-year. The increment was contributed by Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles which expanded 27.3 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 27.0 per cent in February 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector went down -0.7 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 9.4 per cent year-on-year to reach 107.4 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (19.5%), and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (17.6%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 1.8 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, JANUARY 2022

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade sales rose 7.7 per cent to record RM120.5 billion in January 2022

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM120.5 billion in January 2022, registered a growth of 7.7 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 19.4 per cent, Retail Trade 7.3 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 5.7 per cent. Meanwhile, for monthly comparison, sales of Wholesale & Retail Trade contracted -0.2 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 3.6 per cent year-on-year to record 135.5 points. The increment was supported by the increase of Motor Vehicles 16.3 per cent, Retail Trade 3.0 per cent, and Wholesale Trade 1.5 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 1.1 per cent month-on-month in January 2022.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM58.6 billion in January 2022 with a growth of 5.7 per cent as against January 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 15.3 per cent and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 9.5 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 1.7 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 133.6 points, expanded 1.5 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (13.9%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (8.3%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (4.1%), and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (2.8%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index increased marginally 0.4 per cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 7.3 per cent as compared to January 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (26.8%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (19.5%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (10.1%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (8.4%), and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (8.2%). Compared with December 2021, sales of this sub-sector went up 1.0 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 3.0 per cent to 147.4 points as compared to January 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (26.2%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (13.4%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (7.2%), and Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (5.9%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 1.8 per cent as against December 2021.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a growth of 19.4 per cent year-on-year. The increment was contributed by Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles which expanded 26.8 per cent, Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 24.5 per cent, and Sale of Motor Vehicles 20.1 per cent in January 2022. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector went down -11.5 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 16.3 per cent year-on-year to reach 107.7 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles (23.5%), Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (19.9%), and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (15.7%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector decreased -3.3 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, DECEMBER 2021  

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade Recorded The Highest Monthly Sales Value Amounting RM120.5 Billion In December, With Annual Sales Reached RM1.3 Trillion 2021

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM120.5 billion in December 2021, registered a growth of 3.5 per cent year-on-year. The increase was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Wholesale Trade 4.1 per cent, Retail Trade 3.5 per cent and Motor Vehicles 1.5 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 0.6 per cent year-on-year to record 135.9 points. The increment was supported by the increase of Motor Vehicles 1.4 per cent, Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade 0.5 per cent respectively. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down -0.4 per cent month-on-month in December 2021.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM57.6 billion in December 2021 with a growth of 4.1 per cent as against December 2020. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 14.7 per cent and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 8.1 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 2.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 132.1 points, expanded 0.5 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (9.9%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (7.5%), Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (3.1%), Wholesale of Household Goods (2.8%) and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (1.5%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 0.5 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 3.5 per cent as compared to December 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (27.5%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (11.1%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (8.5%), Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (6.4%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (6.0%). Compared with November 2021, sales of this sub-sector went up 1.3 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 0.5 per cent to 146.0 points as compared to December 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (25.1%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (4.6%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (4.1%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (3.7%) and Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (3.4%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it contracted 3.5 per cent as against November 2021.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a growth of 1.5 per cent year-on-year. The increment was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories which expanded 11.7 per cent, Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 9.8 per cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 5.6 per cent in December 2021. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector went up 8.2 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 1.4 per cent year-on-year to reach 119.6 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (8.7%), Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (7.0%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (1.4%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector increased 9.3 per cent month-on-month.

QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, FOURTH QUARTER 2021

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 1.4 per cent in fourth quarter 2021

In the fourth quarter of 2021, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 1.4 per cent to reach 133.5 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The positive growth was recorded in Motor Vehicles (3.7%) and Retail Trade (2.0%) sub-sectors. However, Wholesale Trade posted a marginal decrease of -0.03 per cent. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index also soared 16.3 per cent in this quarter.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade climbed up 15.3 per cent as against the third quarter of 2021. The positive growth was contributed by Motor Vehicles, Retail Trade, and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors of 137.1 per cent, 8.5 per cent and 6.0 per cent respectively.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector decreased marginally -0.03 per cent in fourth quarter 2021 as compared to the same quarter in 2020. This contraction was attributed to Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis with -7.5 per cent, followed by Other Specialised Wholesale of -4.0 per cent. For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went up 6.8 per cent.

RETAIL TRADE

For the fourth quarter of 2021, Retail Trade recorded a positive growth of 2.0 per cent to 142.7 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The increment was due in Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (23.9%), Retail Sale of Foods, Beverages & Tobacco (6.5%) and Retail Sale in Non-Specialised Stores (6.2%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector posted gains 10.8 per cent.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered a positive growth of 3.7 per cent year-on-year. This positive momentum was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles which increased 8.9 per cent and 1.7 per cent respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as against the previous quarter, it grew 136.9 per cent.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, NOVEMBER 2020

Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia records   RM110.4 billion in November 2020

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade  recorded  RM110.4  billion  in  November  2020  to  register  -1.2 per cent  year-on-year. This  was  due  to  Retail  Trade  which  contracted  2.3 per cent (-RM1.1 billion). Similarly, Wholesale Trade also recorded a decrease of  0.7 per cent (-RM0.4 billion). On  the  other  hand,  Motor  Vehicles  continued  a  positive  growth  of   1.2 per cent or an increase of  RM0.1 billion.

In  November  2020, volume  index  of  Wholesale  &  Retail Trade registered a growth of   -1.6 per cent year-on-year to record  129.5 points. The fall was due to Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade which decreased  3.2 per cent and  0.5 per cent respectively. In  contrast,  Motor  Vehicles  recorded  a  positive  growth  to  register  0.4 per cent. In  terms  of  seasonally  adjusted  volume  index, it  went up  0.7 per cent month-on-month.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM52.8 billion in November 2020, a decrease of RM0.4 billion (-0.7%) as against November 2019. Other Specialised Wholesale  and  Wholesale  on  a  Fee  or  Contract  Basis  recorded  a  fall of  6.8 per cent  and  6.6 per cent respectively as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased  1.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  128.7 points, contracted  0.5 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in  Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-8.6%) and Other Specialised Wholesale (-5.9%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  1.0 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a negative growth of  2.3 per cent as compared to November 2019. Among groups that contributed to this decrement were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-14.6%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-6.2%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-5.1%). Compared with October 2020, sales of this sub-sector rose  1.4 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded  -3.2 per cent growth to 138.8 points as compared to November 2019. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-13.8%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-7.6%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-5.6%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it edged down  0.6 per cent as against October 2020.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered year-on-year growth of  1.2 per cent. This increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles which registered a growth of  7.1 per cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycle 6.3 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased  0.5 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles grew  0.4 per cent year-on-year to reach  105.7 points. The increment was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles (9.9%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (2.9%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector declined  1.2 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, JANUARY 2021

Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia records Rm111.7  billion in January 2021 

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded  RM111.7  billion  in  January  2021,  registering -2.7 per cent contraction year-on year. The contraction  was   due  to  Motor  Vehicles  which  slipped  -13.8 per cent. Similarly,  Retail  Trade and Wholesale Trade also decreased -2.5 per cent and -0.4 per cent respectively.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of  -2.9 per cent year-on-year to record 130.5 points. The decline was due to the decrease of -13.1 per cent and -3.2 per cent in Motor Vehicles and Retail Trade respectively. Wholesale Trade also  recorded a negative growth to register -0.1  per  cent.  As for  seasonally adjusted volume index, it  went  down 2.0 per  cent  month-on-month in January 2021

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM55.4 billion in January 2021, a decrease of RM0.2 billion (-0.4%) as against January 2020. Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals recorded a fall of  -6.0 per cent, Other Specialised Wholesale  -4.9 per cent and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis  -4.7 per cent as  compared  to  the  previous  year. For  monthly  comparison,  sales  of  this  sub-sector rose  0.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  131.8 points, contracted  0.1 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (-7.6%), Other Specialised Wholesale (-5.0%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-2.0%). As for  seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased 0.1 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a negative growth of  2.5 per cent as compared to January 2020. Among  groups  that  contributed  to  this  fall  were  Retail  Sale  of  Automotive  Fuel  in  Specialised  Stores  (-14.1%),  Retail  Sale  of  Other  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores (-7.0%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores  (-5.1%). Compared  with  December  2020,  sales  of  this  sub-sector edged down  2.6 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded -3.2 per cent growth to 142.9 points as compared to January 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-12.5%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-8.0%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-6.4%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  2.2 per cent as against December 2020.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered year-on-year growth of negative 13.8 per cent. This decrease was attributed to Sale of  Motor  Vehicles which registered a growth of -17.6 per  cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of  Motorcycle -11.1 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector contracted  20.5 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles declined  -13.1 per cent year-on-year to reach 90.6 points. The decrease was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles (-16.8%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (-11.4%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector went down 18.2 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, OCTOBER 2021

Malaysia’s Wholesale and Retail Trade sales regained its pre-pandemic level at Rm116.4 billion in October 2021, an increase of 5.4 per cent year-on-year

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM116.4 billion in October 2021, registered a growth of  5.4 per cent year-on-year. The increase was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 10.2 per cent, Retail Trade 5.1 per cent and Wholesale Trade 4.4 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of  1.3 per cent year-on-year to record  132.0 points. The increment was supported by the increase of  7.0 per cent and  2.2 per cent in Motor Vehicles and Retail Trade, respectively. On the other hand, Wholesale Trade recorded a negative growth of  -1.2 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up  5.9 per cent month-on-month in October 2021.

WHOLESALE TRADE

For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose  5.3 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  131.9 points, contracted  -1.2 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-10.3%), Other Specialised Wholesale (-4.1%) and Wholesale of Household Goods (-2.4%). However, the seasonally adjusted volume index increased  3.4 per cent month-on-month.

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of  5.1 per cent as compared to October 2020.  Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (28.6%), Retail Sale  of  Automotive  Fuel in Specialised Stores  (17.8%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (11.4%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (8.7%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (8.2%). Compared with September 2021, sales of this sub-sector went up  4.8 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of  2.2 per cent to 138.5 points as compared to October 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (24.6%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (8.4%) and Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (7.9%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (11.4%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (7.2%).  As  for  seasonally  adjusted volume  index,  it increased 3.0 per cent as against September 2021.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a growth of 10.2 per cent year-on-year. The increment was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles which rebounded 25.5 per cent in October 2021. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector elavated 31.2 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 7.0 per cent year-on-year to reach 112.8 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles  (28.7%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector expanded  29.4 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, NOVEMBER 2021

Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade hits the highest sale to record Rm118.1 billion in November 2021, increased 7.0 per cent

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM118.1 billion in November 2021, registered a growth of 7.0 per cent year-on-year. The increase was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 8.6 per cent, Wholesale Trade 6.8 per cent and Retail Trade 6.7 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 2.9 per cent year-on-year to record 133.3 points. The increment was supported by the increase of Motor Vehicles 5.2 per cent, Retail Trade 3.3 per cent and Wholesale Trade 1.4 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 1.6 per cent month-on-month in November 2021.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM56.3 billion in November 2021 with a growth of 6.8 per cent as against November 2020. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 15.5 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 11.2 per cent and Other Specialised Wholesale 7.6 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 1.0 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 130.7 points, expanded 1.4 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (8.1%), Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animal (7.1%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (2.3%) and Wholesale of Household Goods (1.8%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index increased 4.0 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 6.7 per cent as compared to November 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (28.4%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (18.2%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (11.6%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (9.9%) and Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (9.1%). Compared with October 2021, sales of this sub-sector went up 3.4 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 3.3 per cent to 143.4 points as compared to November 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (24.5%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (8.1%), Retail Sale in Non specialised Stores (7.5%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (6.9%), and Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (6.7%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased marginally 0.5 per cent as against October 2021.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a growth of 8.6 per cent year-on-year. The increment was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles which expanded 11.8 per cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 9.4 per cent in November 2021. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector went down 1.9 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 5.2 per cent year-on-year to reach 111.2 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles (13.0%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (5.4%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector contracted 3.3 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, JULY 2021

Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia declined 14.7 per cent to Rm92.7 billion in July 2021, second consecutive month of double-digit negative growth this year

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM92.7 billion in July 2021, registered a negative growth of -14.7 per cent year-on-year. The fall was contributed by all sub-sectors with Motor Vehicles -85.4 per cent, Retail Trade -8.1 per cent and Wholesale Trade -1.1 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a negative growth of -16.7 per cent year-on-year to record 106.5 points. The main sub-sector that contributed to the fall was Motor Vehicles with a decrease of -88.2 per cent. Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade also recorded a negative growth to register -8.9 per cent and -4.0 per cent, respectively. However, seasonally adjusted volume index went up 1.0 per cent month-on-month in July 2021.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM49.5 billion in July 2021 with a negative growth of -1.1 per cent as against July 2020. This decrease was attributed to Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis -22.1 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods -12.1 per cent, Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies -10.4 per cent and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade -1.2 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector contracted 2.4 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 116.6 points, contracted -4.0 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-21.6%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (-9.8%), Wholesale of Household Goods (-8.7%) and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (-4.8%). On the other hand, seasonally adjusted volume index edged up 0.1 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a negative growth of -8.1 per cent as compared to July 2020. Among groups that contributed to this decline were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-14.1%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-11.1%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (-10.8%). Contrarily, sales of this sub-sector went up 1.4 per cent as compared with June 2021.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a negative growth of -8.9 per cent to 126.5 points as compared to July 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-18.0%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-13.7%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (-10.1%). Conversely, seasonally adjusted volume index increased 1.1 per cent as against June 2021.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a negative growth of -85.4 per cent year-on-year. This decrease was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles which registered a growth of -88.7 per cent, Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories -87.4 per cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles -86.9 per cent. However, sales of this sub-sector increased 118.6 per cent month-on-month.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles slipped -88.2 per cent year-on-year to reach 13.8 points. The decline was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycle (-93.5%), Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (-89.2%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (-88.3%). On the other hand, seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector expanded 67.1 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, SEPTEMBER 2021

Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia Stood at Rm108.1 billion in September 2021, dipped -2.6 per cent

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM108.1 billion in September 2021, registered a growth of -2.6 per cent year-on-year. The fall was contributed by Motor Vehicles sub-sector -20.9 per cent and Retail Trade -1.1 per cent. On the other hand, Wholesale Trade recorded a positive growth of 0.9 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of -5.6 per cent year-on-year to record 123.3 points. The main sub-sector that contributed to the fall was Motor Vehicles with a decrease of -25.9 per cent, Retail Trade -2.8 per cent and Wholesale Trade -2.7 per cent. However, seasonally adjusted volume index went up 9.7 per cent month-on-month in September 2021.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM53.0 billion in September 2021 with a positive growth of 0.9 per cent as against September 2020. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 8.6 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 6.3 per cent and Other Specialised Wholesale 3.7 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 2.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 128.1 points, contracted -2.7 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-17.2%), Wholesale of Household Goods (-7.6%) and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (-6.6%). On the other hand, seasonally adjusted volume index climbed up 1.7 per cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of -1.1 per cent as compared to September 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this decline were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-9.8%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (-3.9%). Contrarily, sales of this sub-sector went up 4.6 per cent as compared with August 2021.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of -2.8 per cent to 132.3 points as compared to September 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-10.7%), Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (-8.0%) and Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-2.1%). Conversely, seasonally adjusted volume index increased 8.4 per cent as against August 2021.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a growth of -20.9 per cent year-on-year. This decrease was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles which registered a growth of -28.4 per cent, Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles -25.3 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories -23.2 per cent. However, sales of this sub-sector surged 85.2 per cent month-on-month.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles slipped -25.9 per cent year-on-year to reach 83.2 points. The decline was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (-42.8%), Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (-30.4%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (-27.3%). On the other hand, seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector expanded 98.9 per cent month-on-month.
