QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, THIRD QUARTER 2021.

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia declined -11.3 per cent in third quarter 2021

In the third quarter of 2021, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of -11.3 per cent to reach 114.8 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The negative growth was recorded in all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles (-58.1%), Retail Trade (-6.7%) and Wholesale Trade (-3.1%). Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index decreased -3.7 per cent in this quarter.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade declined -7.5 per cent as against the second quarter of 2021. The contraction was contributed by Motor Vehicles, Retail Trade, and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors of -38.2 per cent, -6.2 per cent and -4.8 per cent respectively.

Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector contracted -3.1 per cent in third quarter 2021 as compared to the same quarter in 2020. This contraction was attributed to Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis with -21.2 per cent, followed by Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies and Wholesale of Household Goods of -7.9 per cent respectively. For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went down -0.9 per cent.

Retail Trade Sub-sector

For the third quarter of 2021, Retail Trade declined -6.7 per cent to 128.8 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The decrease was depicted in Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-12.6%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-12.0%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (-8.9%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector fell -1.6 per cent.

Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered -58.1 per cent growth year-on-year. The decrease was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles, Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles and Sale of Motor Vehicles which declined -74.6 per cent, -56.6 per cent and -55.6 per cent respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as againts the previous quarter, it decreased -32.2 per cent.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, AUGUST 2021

Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia recorded RM100.0 billion in August 2021, dipped -10.2 per cent year-on-year

Sales of Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia continued to be negatively impacted by lockdown restriction, fell -10.2 per cent year-on-year to RM100.0 billion in August 2021. Motor Vehicles sub-sector plunged -57.6 per cent or RM7.9 billion to register RM5.8 billion in August 2021. Retail Trade also dropped -7.5 per cent or RM3.4 billion to RM42.3 billion. This was followed by Wholesale Trade which edged down -0.1 per cent to reach RM51.9 billion.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a year-on-year growth of -12.2 per cent. The contraction was caused by Motor Vehicles which plunged -59.0 per cent. This was followed by Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade which fell -8.1 per cent and -3.3 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted volume index went up 5.3 per cent month-on-month.

WHOLESALE TRADE

For Wholesale Trade sub-sector, the decline of -0.1 per cent in Wholesale Trade sub-sector in this month was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods which decreased -9.7 per cent to RM9.7 billion. This was followed by Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis which fell -6.7 per cent and -19.4 per cent, respectively. Conversely, Other Specialised Wholesale, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco and Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals grew 5.1 per cent, 3.4 per cent and 3.9 per cent, respectively. For month-on-month comparison, sales of this sub-sector grew 4.7 per cent.

RETAIL TRADE

The contraction of -7.5 per cent in Retail Trade was attributed to Retail Sale in Specialised Stores which declined -14.8 per cent to RM8.1 billion. Likewise, Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores also tumbled -8.1 per cent to record RM15.4 billion. This was followed by Retail Sale of Household Goods -7.5 per cent, Retail Sale of Automotive Fuels -6.2 per cent, Retail Sale of Information & Communication Equipment -0.9 per cent, Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco -1.3 per cent, and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods -1.4 per cent. However, Retail Sale Not in Stores, Stalls or Market as well as Retail Sale in Stalls & Market recorded positive growths of 20.8 per cent and 5.9 per cent, respectively. As for monthly comparison, Retail Trade went up 2.9 per cent with all groups in this sub-sector posted positive growth.

MOTOR VEHICLES

The Motor Vehicles sub-sector growth of -57.6 per cent in August 2021 was dragged down by Sales of Motor Vehicles which slumped -60.9 per cent to RM3.1 billion. This was followed by Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories with -47.2 per cent to record RM1.7 billion. Similarly, Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles also decreased -48.6 per cent to RM0.9 billion followed by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles with a growth of -79.0 per cent to reach RM0.8 billion. On the other hand, for month-on-month comparison, sales of this sub-sector spiked 188.1 per cent, spearheaded by Sales of Motor Vehicles which registered 135.5 per cent, after showrooms and sales centres were allowed to operate in key states.

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade gained 22.0 per cent growth in second quarter 2021

In the second quarter of 2021, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade posted a growth of 22.0 per cent to reach 119.4 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The positive growth was recorded in all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles (28.2%), Retail Trade (21.7%) and Wholesale Trade (21.2%). Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index decreased 7.7 per cent in this quarter.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade decreased 5.1 per cent as against the first quarter of 2021. This was driven by the contraction in Retail Trade, Motor Vehicles and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors of -29.0 per cent, -2.2 per cent and -1.3 per cent respectively as compared to the previous quarter.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector on the positive trend to record 21.2 per cent growth in second quarter 2021 as compared to the same quarter in 2020. This increment was attributed to Other Specialised Wholesale with 44.9 per cent, Non-specialised Wholesale Trade 39.5 per cent and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies 22.9 per cent. For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went down 2.8 per cent.

RETAIL TRADE

For the second quarter of 2021, Retail Trade grew 21.7 per cent to 130.9 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The expansion was depicted in Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (36.3%), Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (35.6%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (35.3%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector fell 6.4 per cent.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles went up 28.2 per cent year-on-year. The increase was contributed by Sales of Motor Vehicles and Sale of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories which expanded 44.3 per cent and 21.4 per cent respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as againts the previous quarter, it decreased 32.4 per cent.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, MAY 2021

Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia recorded RM108.3 billion in May 2021, grew 28.3 per cent year-on-year due to low base

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered RM108.3 billion in May 2021, surged 28.3 per cent year-on-year. This was highly contributed by Wholesale Trade sub-sector which increased 31.2 per cent or RM12.7 billion to RM53.4 billion. Subsequently, Retail Trade expanded 17.3 per cent or RM6.4 billion to RM43.3 billion. Motor Vehicles also showed a significant increase of RM4.8 billion or 71.1 per cent to RM11.6 billion. However, for month-on-month comparison, sales value decreased 2.5 per cent in May 2021.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a year-on-year growth of 27.2 per cent. The expansion was supported by Motor Vehicles which increased 66.0 per cent. This was followed by Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade with 27.9 per cent and 20.1 per cent, respectively. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down 6.6 per cent month-on-month.

WHOLESALE TRADE

For Wholesale Trade sub-sector, the increase of 31.2 per cent in May 2021 was supported by Other Specialised Wholesale which jumped 70.5 per cent or RM9.0 billion to RM21.7 billion. This was followed by Wholesale of Household Goods which expanded 14.3 per cent or RM1.2 billion to settle at RM9.8 billion. Similarly, Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies elevated 27.9 per cent to record RM4.4 billion followed by Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco which grew 7.4 per cent to RM10.5 billion. For month-on-month comparison, sales of this sub-sector edged up 0.8 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 126.7 points, climbed up 27.9 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Other Specialised Wholesale (67.8%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased 4.5 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade sub-sector recorded a growth of 17.3 per cent, contributed by both sales of essential and non-essential products mainly Retail Sale in Specialised Stores with 24.5 per cent to RM8.6 billion. This was followed by Retail Sale of Household Goods with 32.2 per cent to record RM5.8 billion and Retail Sale of Information & Communication Equipment which rose 35.6 per cent to RM4.8 billion. Within the same period, sales of essential goods continued to post a positive growth as reflected in Retail Sales of Automotive Fuel which registered 26.6 per cent to RM3.4 billion year-on-year. This was followed by Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods which grew 4.0 per cent and 28.0 per cent, respectively. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector edged down 2.2 per cent.

Although Retail Trade sale registered a positive year-on-year growth, when comparing with April this year, this sub-sector experienced a contraction of 2.2 per cent due to the reimplementation of Movement Control Order from 12th May until 7th June 2021. Most groups under Retail Trade sub-sector recorded negative growth especially in Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores and Retail Sale in Specialised Stores with -3.2 per cent and -3.8 per cent, respectively.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded 20.1 per cent growth to 131.8 points as compared to May 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Information & Communication Equipment in Specialised Stores (34.3%), Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (30.5%) and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (30.3%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased 2.9 per cent as against April 2021.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector grew 71.1 per cent this month, spearheaded by Sales of Motor Vehicles which soared 99.8 per cent to RM6.3 billion. This was followed by Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories with 55.7 per cent to record RM2.8 billion. Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles increased 39.9 per cent to RM1.4 billion followed by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles with a growth of 31.6 per cent to reach RM1.0 billion. On the other hand, Motor Vehicles sub-sector declined 16.2 per cent as against the previous month. The fall in this group was attributed to Sales in Motor Vehicles which slipped 22.9 per cent followed by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles -22.3 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased 16.2 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles rose 66.0 per cent year-on-year to reach 90.6 points. The increase was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles (115.0%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector declined 25.0 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, APRIL 2021

Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia Records a Sturdy Growth of 66.2 per cent to RM111.1 billion in April 2021, with Motor Vehicles Increase 1,551.3 per cent

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered RM111.1 billion in April 2021, surged 66.2 per cent year-on year. The sub-sector contributed the most was Retail Trade which increased 56.4 per cent. Subsequently, Wholesale Trade expanded  40.5 per cent and Motor Vehicles soared 1,551.3 per cent.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a year-on-year growth of 71.5 per cent. The expansion was supported by Motor Vehicles which increased 1,687.4 per cent. This was followed by Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade with 63.5 per cent and 43.0 per cent respectively. As for seasonal adjusted volume index, it expanded 5.1 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales Retail Trade recorded a growth of 56.4 per cent, contributed by both sales of essential and non-essential products mainly Retail Sale in Specialised Stores with 133.5 per cent. This was followed by Retail Sale of Household Goods (103.4%) and Retail Sale of Information & Communication Equipment (55.8%). For sales of essential goods, they continued to post a positive growth namely Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (22.0%), Retail Sales of Automotive Fuel (138.7%) and Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (10.0%). For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector edged down 1.5 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded 63.5 per cent growth to 135.1 points as compared to April 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale in Specialised Stores (132.3%), and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods (114.4%), Retail Sale of Household Goods (103.3%) and Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel (102.7%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 4.6 per cent as against March 2021.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector recorded a sturdy growth of 1,551.3 per cent in this month. This increase was attributed to Sales of Motor Vehicles which rocketed 1,771.5 per cent. This was followed by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles with 2,450.4 per cent. Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories also grew 1,033.7 per cent followed by Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles with a growth of 1,448.7 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased 7.9 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles rose 1,687.8 per cent year-on-year to reach 113.0 points. The increase was contributed by Sales, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycle (3,102.7%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles (2,037.4%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector inched up 0.4 per cent month-on-month.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, MARCH 2021

Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia Rebounds 9.3 per Cent in March 2021 to Record RM112.8 billion

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM112.8 billion in March 2021, registered positive growth 9.3 per cent year-on year. The growth was attributed by Motor Vehicles which increased double-digit 40.7 per cent. Similarly, Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade rose 10.5 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively.

In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 9.1 per cent year-on-year to record 131.0 points. The advanced was due to the increase of 38.0 per cent in Motor Vehicles. Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade also recorded a positive growth to register 9.6 per cent and 2.3 per cent respectively. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it declined -1.6 per cent month-on-month in March 2021.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM52.7 billion in March 2021, increased RM0.1 billion (1.8%) as against March 2020. Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco grew 6.5 per cent, Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies 4.9 per cent and Wholesale of Household Goods 4.5 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector were up 0.3 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 126.6 points, climbed up 2.3 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (6.0%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (4.9%) and Wholesale of Household Goods (4.2%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it declined -4.1 per cent month-on-month.

RETAIL TRADE

Sales of Retail Trade registered a positive growth of 10.5 per cent as compared to March 2020. Among groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (17.2%), Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (15.0%) and Retail Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (13.7%). Compared with February 2021, sales of this sub-sector posted gains 1.7 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded 9.6 per cent growth to 138.9 points as compared to March 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (12.4%), Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (12.1%) and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (11.1%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased 0.6 per cent as against February 2021.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered year-on-year growth of positive 40.7 per cent. This increase was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles which registered a growth of 73.6 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles 60.4 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rebound 34.6 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles rose 38.0 per cent year-on-year to reach 123.3 points. The increased was contributed by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (72.7%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles (60.6%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector surged 16.1 per cent month-on-month.

For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector edged down 1.5 per cent.

QUARTERLY VOLUME INDEX OF WHOLESALE AND RETAIL TRADE, FIRST QUARTER 2021

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade Turned Around 1.5 per cent in First Quarter 2021

In the first quarter of 2021, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rebounded for the first time after 3 consecutive quarters of negative growth due to COVID-19 to record 1.5 per cent year-on-year. This growth was attributed to Motor Vehicles sub-sector which grew 6.6 per cent. This was followed by Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade with 0.9 per cent and 0.8 per cent respectively. Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index decreased 1.4 per cent in this quarter.

Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade grew 0.5 per cent as against the fourth quarter of 2020. This growth was underpinned by Retail Trade, Motor Vehicles and Wholesale Trade sub-sector recorded an increase of 2.5 per cent, 1.6 per cent and 0.6 per cent respectively as compared to the previous quarter.

WHOLESALE TRADE

Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector on the positive trend to record 0.8 per cent growth in first quarter 2021 as compared to the same quarter in 2020. This increment was attributed to Non-specialised Wholesale with 5.4 per cent, Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies 4.8 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods as well as Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco which recorded a growth of 4.4 per cent respectively. For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went down 2.5 per cent.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale Trade, it rose 0.6 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

RETAIL TRADE

For the first quarter of 2021, Retail Trade recorded 0.9 per cent growth as against the same quarter of the previous year, pushed up by Retail Sale Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets 7.8 per cent, Retail Sale via Stalls & Market 6.9 per cent, Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 5.2 per cent, Retail Sale of Information & Communication Equipment 4.3 per cent and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores 3.2 per cent. For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector fell 0.05 per cent.

Within the same period, seasonally adjusted volume index of Retail Trade registered an increase of 2.5 per cent as against the preceding quarter.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Volume index of Motor Vehicles went up 6.6 per cent year-on-year, underpinned by Sales, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles and Sales of Motor Vehicles which expanded 18.9 per cent and 14.2 per cent respectively. However, Sales of Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles recorded a negative growth of -3.2 per cent and -3.9 per cent respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as againts the previous quarter, it decreased 2.5 per cent.

In terms of seasonally adjusted volume index, Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered an increase of 1.6 per cent in the current quarter as compared to the fourth quarter of 2020.

1. Preliminary Report Wholesale & Retail Census 2019

The event was held on 27th December in Conference Hall 1, Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia and officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Sri Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician Malaysia.

2. Malaysia Digital Economy 2018

Held on 18th October in Bilik Mawar, Aras 8, Department of Statistics Malaysia, Putrajaya, the event was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Sri Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician Malaysia.

3. Domestic Tourism Survey (DTS) by State, 2018

The launching event was held on 27th September at EQ Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Tourism Malaysia (TM) and Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA). The event was officiated by YB Tuan Muhammad Bakhtiar bin Wan Chik, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
