Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade Malaysia declined -11.3 per cent in third quarter 2021

In the third quarter of 2021, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of -11.3 per cent to reach 114.8 points as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The negative growth was recorded in all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles (-58.1%), Retail Trade (-6.7%) and Wholesale Trade (-3.1%). Meanwhile, for quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index decreased -3.7 per cent in this quarter.
Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade declined -7.5 per cent as against the second quarter of 2021. The contraction was contributed by Motor Vehicles, Retail Trade, and Wholesale Trade sub-sectors of -38.2 per cent, -6.2 per cent and -4.8 per cent respectively.
Wholesale Trade Sub-sector
Volume index of Wholesale Trade sub-sector contracted -3.1 per cent in third quarter 2021 as compared to the same quarter in 2020. This contraction was attributed to Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis with -21.2 per cent, followed by Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies and Wholesale of Household Goods of -7.9 per cent respectively. For quarterly growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade went down -0.9 per cent.
Retail Trade Sub-sector
For the third quarter of 2021, Retail Trade declined -6.7 per cent to 128.8 points as against the same quarter of the previous year. The decrease was depicted in Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-12.6%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-12.0%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (-8.9%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, volume index of this sub-sector fell -1.6 per cent.
Motor Vehicles Sub-sector
Volume index of Motor Vehicles registered -58.1 per cent growth year-on-year. The decrease was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles, Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles and Sale of Motor Vehicles which declined -74.6 per cent, -56.6 per cent and -55.6 per cent respectively. For performance of this sub-sector as againts the previous quarter, it decreased -32.2 per cent.
